As the sun begins to linger a little longer over Chesterman Beach, there's a palpable sense of awakening in the air. Our team has been bustling under these early rays over the past weeks, trimming shrubs and refreshing the landscape, all in preparation for the vibrant season ahead. Our annual closure is now complete, and we're delighted to welcome you back to a polished and rejuvenated Wickaninnish Inn.

At the Ancient Cedars Spa, we've embraced this theme of renewal. The Cedar Sanctuary has been meticulously redone during the closure, now offering a refreshed haven for relaxation. On your next visit, we invite you to set aside some time to rejuvenate your body and spirit in this serene and popular space.

February reminds us that love manifests in many forms, through cherished moments with family, the bonds we share with friends, and the connections we build within our communities. Family, in its many expressions, is at the heart of what we do, and that extends to the incredible team here at the Inn. Earlier this year, we had the privilege of recognizing two remarkable individuals whose contributions continue to inspire us.

Kareen Brown

Our Team Member of the Year, Kareen Brown, embodies the spirit of community and creativity, enriching the lives of everyone around her. A natural leader through kindness and action, she brings people together—whether through her warmth, mentorship, or the incredible dishes she creates, including her award-winning clam chowder that wowed both judges and guests at last year’s Pacific Rim Whale Festival. From lifting team spirits to orchestrating special moments, Kareen transforms our workplace into a family, reminding us that the heart of hospitality lies in genuine connection.

Gefford Labastida

A true cornerstone of the Inn, our Leader of the Year, Gefford Labastida, seamlessly balances operational excellence with a vision that elevates both his team and our guest experience. His ability to anticipate challenges, create efficient systems, and lead with a steady, supportive presence has left an indelible mark on every department. He represents the best of leadership—not just through his expertise, but by fostering growth and success in those around him. Of course, it is the contributions of every team member that make the Wickaninnish Inn what it is, and we are grateful for the passion and dedication of our entire team.

A season where the coast truly comes alive again after our winter hiatus, spring offers a front-row seat to many natural wonders including one of nature’s most breathtaking spectacles. Each year, roughly 20,000 Gray whales pass by Tofino’s shores. Mothers and calves begin to appear from mid-March through May, often stopping to feed in the sheltered bays. This awe-inspiring journey aligns with the Pacific Rim Whale Festival and the reopening of the Ucluelet Aquarium, celebrating the incredible marine life of our coastline. As spring break approaches, it’s the perfect time to plan your coastal getaway and see these magnificent creatures up close.

The Wickaninnish has always been a place to slow down and appreciate the beauty of the coast, and we look forward to welcoming you back to experience it anew. Here’s to fresh beginnings, cherished connections, and the many special moments yet to come this year.

Warmly,

Charles
