Wickaninnish Inn Team Member Christine Mackey is no stranger to awe-inspiring landscapes. She grew up in Pemberton, BC, and describes "sitting on a mountainside and looking all the way down the valley, seeing the patchwork of farms and forest" as one of her favourite things about her hometown. But there's one thing Tofino has that's harder to find inland: the beach. And that's Christine's favourite place to be here!
Christine has been at the Wickaninnish Inn as our esteemed Facility Manager for the past three years. She's held many other positions with our team before her current role, including Room Attendant, Housekeeping Supervisor, Housekeeping Assistant Manager, Guest Services Representative and Housekeeping Manager (for seven and a half years!). Years ago, Christine was travelling between Jasper, Port Alberni and Nanaimo (with a stint in college, too), but on her "third tour of duty" to the coast, it stuck. She came for just six weeks, and in May, it'll be 14 years since her return.
We've admired and appreciated Christine's talent and continued growth through all her positions at the Inn. She has shown her excellent capabilities in each of her roles and as a leader in more ways than one: she is also the Chair of our Green Committee.
The Inn is committed to sustainability, something Christine says has always impressed her, and being part of the solutions on behalf of the Inn is something she looks forward to. With Christine at our Green Committee's helm, The Pointe Restaurant has become a certified Green Leader by the Vancouver Island Green Business Collective.
Of course, Christine isn't always working. Usually, she spends time down in the Bahamas every year and spends her days going fishing and working on her Jeep. At home in Tofino, she enjoys relaxing at home with her cats (who yell at her the moment she gets out of bed in the morning), taking pictures during beach walks, and visiting her sister and niece, Claire, down island (pre-COVID). She is currently reading Jen Sincero's You are a Bad A**: How to Stop doubting your Greatness; next up, Christine is looking forward to starting some online courses in March, guiding her towards a two-year plan of gaining more skills (you'll have to ask her for the details!).
On her love for Tofino, Christine says she likes meeting the diverse people who come here most, "So many people with different life experiences from all over the world." And her suggestion to any visitor coming to the west coast? "Get outside, whether it's to the forest or down the beach, take it all in!"
